Christmas Eve - Roppongi & Ebisu

Once we got settled in at the hotel, Dave and I met up with my friend Tomi, a Tokyo native who is currently studying at Edinburgh but was back home for the holidays. After attempting to take a bus to Roppongi through the worst traffic jam ever (because of it the first 2 or 3 buses didn't even turn up) it took forever to get down the road, so we just got off between stops and walked the 10 minutes that the driver said would have taken around 40 minutes by bus. We had a huge, gigantic Indian meal, complete with 2ft long naan breads, each, then headed to Roppongi Hills, the Christmas Eve couple's paradise.

When we arrived, the whole area was decked out with Christmas trees and fairy lights, and a "Holy Night" concert was underway. We went up to the balcony for a better look, and got beautiful views of lit up streets and Tokyo Tower in the background, shared with hundreds of couples, who traditionally go out for a romantic date on Christmas Eve in Japan.

A view looking up

Tokyo Tower in the background

An inexplicable giant metal spider in one of the many courtyards.
We stayed for a few hours, exploring the Roppongi Hills complex, (attached to the Grand Hyatt hotel, full of shops and gardeny courtyards and water features and restaurants...) enjoying views and sneaking into places that we probably weren't supposed to be, behind the balcony full of very, very expensive restaurants.
We then headed to Ebisu, (home of Yebisu beer) where a big square was lit up by a giant chandelier, with a big pretty mansiony fairy-tale building in the background.

(I must have been holding the camera squint, because these seem to be tilted to one side. Um, please ignore.)
Coming up... Christmas Day!
